Gillian Walker, a 39-year-old mother of 4 in Prestonpans, East Lothian, claims her family is being terrorized in their home by a ghost. She claims the ghost slams doors, "attacks" guests and plays with the tv. And to top things off, the ghost appears as a man hanging from a noose in the stairwell.
It has gotten so bad that three of her four kids have fled the house for the safety of grandma's place. Only Gillian and her youngest son Kristian have remained behind. Gillian said:
There is a ghost in my house and it has ripped my family apart. My kids are so terrified they won't even come home.
Gillian consulted a local medium, Roberta Gordon, to have the home cleared of evil spirits. But until then the presence of the ghost has made Gillian and her 3-year-old son ill. Roberta visited and said,
As soon as I walked through the door I wanted to turn and be sick… There was a very heavy atmosphere. I was aware of a lot of spirit activity.
I guess I have a few questions with this one. First, why do ghosts always play with the tv set? Most of these ghosts were alive way before tv even existed… so how would they even know how to operate one? And second, if living in your home is making you ill, then why aren't you packing your bags and rolling out?
Anyone have some thoughts on the matter?

Why is she living in a home that makes her ill? Because she’s nuts, clearly. This hallucinating lady has scared the crap out of her kids by convincing them that a ghost lives in their home. Children have wildly active imaginations and trust their mothers implicitly. She should be ashamed of abusing that trust by making her children frightened of things SHE imagines. That she is aware that there is nothing to really be afraid of is evidenced by the fact that she keeps her three-year-old son in the house. Any mother I know would do ANYTHING to protect their three-year-old from danger.

I do have strong opinions on the matter, but probably not quite what you expect. I’m very anti-fear, or at least unnecessary fear. It’s too easily used as a political weapon and can motivate large numbers of people to do irrational and even evil things. Making children afraid early on only increases their susceptibility to manipulation through fear throughout their lives. Using the current US political environment as an example:
Number of deaths of US citizens as a result of terrorism in 2002: less than 1,000 (the government won’t disclose the exact number). This includes US citizens in other countries (troops, embassy workers, etc.)
Number of deaths of US citizens due to heart disease in 2002: 696,947 (Center of Disease Control)
There were about 285,000,000 US citizens in 2002 (US Census Bureau) putting any one person’s odds of dieing in a terrorist attack at about 1 in 285,000, or 0.00035% and odds of dieing from heart disease at 1 in 409, or about 0.25%.
What do politicians talk about fighting when trying to garner votes? Terrorism. Why? Because FRIGHTENS the US populous and will motivate them to support any candidate who is perceived as being ‘tough on terrorism’ despite the politician being incompetent and/or immoral. We, Americans, are clearly not afraid of heart disease since we (collectively speaking) aren’t afraid to stuff our faces till we are obese, a leading cause of heart disease.

So your main issue with this, as I see it, is that the woman is crazy and is scaring her children. I can agree with this if the kids hadn’t seen the ghost. However, in the article, the kids are said to have seen this ghost.
Are they all crazy?

ive actually been and worked on “haunted” cases and i do have to say there are a few that are genuinine and some that are just plain….well…normal
mold can make ya sick, this kids eggsma (spelling srry) can pop up at ANY POINT in life (my brother who is 25 suddenly came down with it)doors opening…BAH! every haunted house does that as well as the tv turning on and off….
but i have seen and been in straight up HAUNTED houses.
Is the whole family off their rockers??? dont know but the enviroment that the house has can cause allot of this issues just as well as a demon/ghost

No, I think children are just impressionable. They have such an active imagination; it is easy for them to imagine they saw a ghost. It is especially easy if the person telling them there is a ghost in the house is someone they are biologically programmed to trust intuitively, their mother. Thus the children are not crazy, just impressionable. The mother is probably not truly lacking sanity, but I’m sure she lacks reason to some degree.

As for the question about the TV, it is therorized that paranormal entities require energy to manifest or communicate. The TV is a great source of that. Also, the static (white noise) on an unused channel can be used by an entity to creat sound. Again, these are only theories. Nothing is proven in this field. As for anyone being “crazy”, I wouldn’t know. I haven’t been there to experience it first hand. I would be reluctant to lable anyone right or wrong without experiencing the place myself.
Another theory is that children are more susceptable to the paranormal because they haven’t been desensitized (sp) by this world (reality) yet.
Just an opinion.

Well this story seems interessting. I do agree with sidfaiwu to an extend however. Alot of things can be created through hysteria. For instance, a friend of mine claims to have seen the devil on a class trip. The thing was that this girl started screaming she saw the devil so every girl on the trip got freaked out and they started to believe her. So if someone Important as a mother would maybe seeing ghosts or halluzinations could affect the beliefs of the children. They might be affected by this and therefore be more recepitve to see something that isnt even there.
